Energy East has been a leader in the EPA self compliance program for SF6 gas losses. SF6 is non-toxic gas used as an insulator in breakers.  Its warming effect is 24,000 times greater than CO2. By installing new primary breakers that require less SF6 and aggressively avoiding leaks, we reduced our SF6 losses by 85% since 1998.
